Addictions Statistics: A Growing Global Problem

Addictions are a growing problem worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, over 5% of the global population has an addiction of some kind. These addictions can range from drug or alcohol abuse to gambling or gaming addictions.

Drug and Alcohol Abuse

Drug and alcohol abuse are some of the most common addictions. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, an estimated 20.5 million Americans over the age of 12 suffer from a substance use disorder. Of those, 15.1 million have an alcohol use disorder and 7.9 million have an illicit drug use disorder. Globally, an estimated 243 million people between the ages of 15-64 use drugs each year.

Tobacco Use

Tobacco use is another common addiction. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 34.2 million Americans over the age of 18 are smokers. Globally, an estimated 1.1 billion people use tobacco products.

Gambling Addiction

Gambling addiction is a growing problem worldwide. According to the National Council on Problem Gambling, an estimated 2 million Americans are problem gamblers. Additionally, an estimated 4-6 million Americans are considered to be at risk for developing a gambling problem. Globally, an estimated 3-6% of adults have a gambling problem.

Gaming Addiction

Gaming addiction is a growing problem among adolescents and young adults. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 3-4% of gamers are considered to have a gaming disorder. This disorder is characterized by impaired control over gaming, increased priority given to gaming over other activities, and continued gaming despite negative consequences.

Fortunately, there are a variety of treatment options available for those struggling with addiction. These include:
