Anxiety disorders are a group of mental health conditions that cause people to feel excessively anxious, worried or scared. They can affect how a person thinks, feels and behaves and can interfere with their day-to-day life. Anxiety disorders are very common and can range from mild to severe.

Types of anxiety disorders

The most common types of anxiety disorders include:

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) – is characterized by persistent and excessive worry about a variety of topics, such as health, work, finances, relationships, or other life circumstances.
  • Panic Disorder – is characterized by sudden and intense episodes of fear or panic, often accompanied by physical symptoms such as a racing heart, sweating, trembling, and shortness of breath.

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) – is characterized by intrusive and unwanted thoughts, images, or urges (obsessions) that cause distress and anxiety, as well as behaviors that are performed to reduce the distress and anxiety (compulsions).
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) – is characterized by flashbacks, nightmares, and intrusive thoughts or memories of a traumatic event.

Signs and symptoms of anxiety disorders

The signs and symptoms of anxiety disorders vary depending on the type of disorder, but may include:

  • Excessive worry or fear
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Irritability
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Physical symptoms such as sweating, trembling, and a racing heart
  • Feelings of panic or dread
  • Avoidance of situations that cause anxiety

Causes of anxiety disorders

The exact cause of anxiety disorders is not known, but a combination of factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, and life events, may be involved. Stressful life events, such as the death of a loved one, divorce, or job loss, can trigger an anxiety disorder in people who are already predisposed to having one.

Treatment for anxiety disorders

Treatment for anxiety disorders typically involves a combination of psychotherapy and medication. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the most commonly used form of psychotherapy and focuses on helping people recognize and change unhelpful patterns of thinking and behavior.


Antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications are commonly used to treat anxiety disorders. These medications work by increasing levels of serotonin, a chemical in the brain that helps regulate mood.

Self-help strategies

In addition to therapy and medication, there are many self-help strategies that can be used to reduce symptoms of anxiety, such as:

  • Exercising regularly
  • Practicing relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or progressive muscle relaxation
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Eating a healthy diet
  • Limiting caffeine and alcohol
  • Engaging in activities that bring pleasure or relaxation
  • Talking to a trusted friend or family member

Anxiety disorders can be very distressing and interfere with a person’s ability to live a normal life. However, with treatment and self-help strategies, it is possible to reduce symptoms and lead a healthy, productive life.
